Cher is opening up for the first time about her daughter Chastity’s decision to undergo a sex change to become Chaz Bono.
In a statement, the legendary singer said she doesn’t fully understand Chaz’s decision, but that she loves her child and will support her.
“Chaz is embarking on a difficult journey, but one that I will support. I respect the courage it takes to go through this transition in the glare of public scrutiny, and although I may not understand, I will strive to be understanding. The one thing that will never change is my abiding love for my child.”
Last week, Bono’s publicist made the announcement that the author and musician – whose father is Sonny Bono — had begun the process to become Chaz shortly after her 40th birthday.
"Chaz, after many years of consideration, has made the courageous decision to honor his true identity," Bono's publicist, Howard Bragman, told TMZ.
"He is proud of his decision and grateful for the support and respect that has already been shown by his loved ones," Bragman said. "It is Chaz's hope that his choice to transition will open the hearts and minds of the public regarding this issue, just as his 'coming out' did nearly 20 years ago."

This is some heavy shit...okay!, I'm sorry but how do you just make this decision. We all as woman have it hard and sometimes wish we could turn into a man in certain situations, but this just takes the cake. I know first hand about the lesbian struggle and on some levels knows how the transgender transition works and they as so I, pretty much believe that they were born in the wrong body...and they profess that feeling to anyone that is listening, so why are we just receiving this bit of news. Well I'm happy for her, if this is what she wants to do...I just think it makes us as a community look indecisive, just what we need to not be taken seriously.
